My childhood friend, who I promised to marry in the future, came back as a swordsman

Chapter 270: Because we are the same people

{TL: By Creed}

When I saw Lena crying, my chest tightened painfully.

I thought, I don’t want to see her make that face.

Lena and I are the same.

The weight of what we carry is completely different, but… we’ve both been oppressed.

“Don’t you dare give me cheap sympathy…!!!”

Lena glared at me sharply.

Her whole body radiated anger.

Don’t pity me. Don’t step into my heart. Don’t pretend to be kind.

That was the way Lena rejected me.

“Fate.”

Sofia quietly stepped up beside me.

“I can’t quite grasp the situation…”

“Huh? You can’t?”

I had assumed she’d uncovered something about Lena or the Dawn Alliance and had come to help.

“I just had a bad feeling. So I went looking for you, and when I found that thieving cat, I figured I’d cut her down first.”

“…‘First,’ you say…”

Isn’t that a little too impulsive?

Well, maybe. But thanks to that, she saved me, so I can’t really scold her too much.

“I’ll explain everything later.”

“Understood. Then, let’s proceed with the execution of this thieving cat—”

“Wait wait wait.”

“Yes?”

Sofia looked at me with genuine confusion, as if to ask, Why would you stop me?

Because she’s scary, that’s why.

“Could you leave Lena to me?”

“I’m worried.”

“I’ll be fine. And if we talk properly, I believe Lena will understand too.”

“…Very well. I’ll leave it to you, Fate.”

Sofia gave a small nod and sheathed her sword—though she kept her hand firmly on the hilt.

“But if it comes down to it, I will strike.”

“That’s fine with me.”

Sofia was reacting this strongly because she was worried about me.

I didn’t want to dismiss those feelings.

Alright.

I turned to face Lena again.

“Hey, Lena.”

“…What?”

“I don’t think sympathy is a bad thing. To me, it means trying to put yourself in someone else’s shoes, to feel what they feel.”

Of course, if it becomes pushy…

If you arbitrarily decide someone is pitiful…

That’s not so great.

But being ignored is worse.

Being treated like you don’t matter at all—that’s much harder to bear.

At the very least, if someone sympathizes with you, it means they want to be involved.

And from there, a relationship can grow.

“You might not know this, Lena… but I was tricked and enslaved once.”

“…What?”

“For about ten years, I think. I was treated horribly the whole time… so I feel like I can understand you.”

“…”

“I can’t see you as just another stranger. That’s why I don’t want to hate you…”

I gently held out my hand to her.

“So… let’s stop this, okay?”

“…Fate…”

“Would you be my friend?”

“Ah…”

Lena’s eyes widened.

She looked at my hand, then at her own…

Back and forth, before finally parting her lips to speak.

TL Note: First time seeing a girl getting friend zoned.

My childhood friend, who I promised to marry in the future, came back as a swordsman.

Chapter 1: The reality that I longed for is harsh and painful {TL: By Creed} "Hey, don't stroll around leisurely, you Useless man!" Insults were flying, and the target was me. "I-I'm... sorry..." My reply came out in gasps, as it should. After all, I was carrying a load that was tens of kilos heavier than my own body. In such a state, I had been walking through the dungeon for hours without a break. It was non-stop. It was only natural that I was out of breath, my clothes drenched in sweat, as if I had been doused in water. I wondered if I was experiencing dehydration; my legs were wobbly, and I felt like I might collapse if I let my guard down. "Hurry up, you slacker! You're practically useless except for carrying stuff," Sigurd, the leader of the A-rank party 'Flarebird,' berated me. He held the title of 'Swordmaster' and was the party's main attacker, constantly in action. "Sigurd, you're such a brute. Fate is so...

Chapter 4 Party formation {TL: By Creed} After that, we changed locations and moved to a different inn and restaurant. Since Sigurd and the others stayed behind, I'm not sure what happened to them, but... It seems like Sigurd took an incredibly powerful blow, so he probably won't wake up for a while. "Sister, I'll have orange juice and a parfait." "..." "What about Fate?" "..." "Fate, what's wrong?" "Huh!?" When asked the question, I snapped back to reality. "Oh, um, yeah. Sorry... um, I'll have coffee, please." "Okay. Orange juice and coffee. And a parfait, right? Please wait a moment." The waitress nodded and left. Alone again, I looked at Sofia once more. "It's been a while, Fate." "...Is it really you, Sofia?" "Yes, it's me. Or does Fate see someone else when Fate looks at me?" "No, it's not like that. I would never mistake my precious...

Chapter 3 Escape from the current situation and reunion {TL By: Creed} "What's going on, you incompetent fool!!!" "Guah!?" Sigurd's angry voice was hurled at me, and then I was struck again. I was thrown to the floor. This place was an inn and dining hall, so there were other customers present. However, Sigurd had a notorious reputation as a rough adventurer, and nobody wanted to get involved. Naturally, they pretended not to notice me. However... Being a slave, even if someone with good intentions were to stand up for me, they couldn't help me. How slaves were treated was entirely up to their master. There were no human rights. "You dropped the loot we worked so hard to get, didn't you? Hey, hey, hey! What the hell are you doing? How much do you think today's earnings have decreased because of you?" "I'm sorry... Ugh!?" I was kicked hard in the abdomen. It was a powerful blow that lifted me off the ground. It hurt. I cu...
