Chapter 170: Licorice's Magic Lecture
{Tl: By Creed}
"Alright, let's begin the Ultra-Mega-Cute Licorice-chan's Magic Lecture!"
Upon returning to the inn, Licorice eagerly began her magic lecture, as everyone was eager to learn.
Since there were no desks or chairs for studying, we used the bed as a makeshift seat, sitting in order: me, Aisha, and Sofia. Licorice stood on the table, using it as her stage.
"First off, what is magic? Fate, you answer!"
"Uh, me?"
"You're a student as long as you're attending the lecture. Come on, answer quickly."
"Um, well..."
Magic is said to be a technique created by the goddess who brought the world into existence.
It’s a mystical art that creates something from nothing and embodies miracles.
However, it doesn’t mean you can do anything.
There are limits and things that are impossible.
Also, using magic requires magical energy as fuel.
Magical energy refers to the mental energy possessed by a person.
It varies between individuals; some have a lot, while others have little.
"...Does that sound about right?"
I dredged up vague knowledge and answered as best I could.
"Not bad. Eighty points. I’ll praise you for that."
"Thank you."
"However, I feel Fate's answer was perfect. If I were asked the same question, I would have given the same response."
"Hmm, true. For humans, their knowledge of magic usually stops at that point."
"So, does that mean there's something we don’t know?"
"Why do humans have access to the technique created by the goddess? That explanation is missing, isn’t it?"
"Ah."
When pointed out, I couldn’t help but nod in agreement.
I had various pieces of information about magic, but…
when I thought about it, Licorice was right. How did humans come to possess magic in the first place?
That part remains a mystery.
With a smug grin, Licorice began to explain more about magic, clearly enjoying having the upper hand.
"Listen closely. Humans stole the goddess’s magic."
"Stole...?"
"In the past, the goddess descended to the earth several times to aid struggling humans. During those times, she performed miracles… magic."
"I see."
"Humans, witnessing the goddess’s miracles, envied her power. They wanted that power for themselves."
"So… they stole it?"
"Sofia, correct."
With a casual tone, Licorice revealed something shocking.
I had never deeply considered the origins of magic before, but…
to think it was something stolen from the goddess’s technology.
"Humans were the starting point, and from there, magic spread to various other races. Over time, unique forms of magic exclusive to humans were developed."
"That's incredible..."
"Wasn’t the goddess angry about it?"
"She was absolutely furious."
Coming from Licorice, it was hard to grasp the severity of the matter.
"That’s why the goddess disappeared from the sight of humans. There hasn’t been a record of the goddess appearing in the last few thousand years, has there? That’s because she’s angry about the theft of her magic."
"I didn’t know that..."
Magic is deeply ingrained in our daily lives, indispensable even.
But to think it was originally stolen from the goddess…
The revelation left me with mixed feelings.
"Well, the goddess is magnanimous. While she’s angry, she isn’t planning to do anything drastic to humans. You can rest assured on that front."
"I have a question."
"What is it, Sofia?"
"How does Licorice know all of this?"
"Oh, I’m curious about that too."
Licorice seemed to know things humans didn’t.
Was it because she was special, or was it something unique to fairies?
"Well, it's partly because I'm a super genius," Licorice said, "but it’s also because being a fairy has something to do with it."
"Are fairies special beings?"
"That’s right. Fairies are loved by the goddess."
According to Licorice...
Even though the goddess grew disenchanted with humans, she remains kind and loving toward other races.
Among them, fairies are especially cherished.
Unlike humans, fairies are innocent and untainted.
They are also highly capable and can be incredibly reliable in critical situations.
Because of this, the goddess trusts fairies, and apparently, they still occasionally interact with her.
That’s why fairies know a fair amount about the goddess and her ways—at least, according to Licorice.
"I had no idea… To think that fairies actually communicate with the goddess."
"Well, we fairies are amazing, after all! And pretty, too!"
Licorice wore an expression of overwhelming pride.
"Humans will probably be forgiven eventually. But until then, you should learn from us fairies! Ohohoho!"
"…Fate, can I flick Licorice on the forehead just once?"
"…Please don’t. She might end up flying off somewhere."
In any case…
With this, the lecture to acquire background knowledge came to an end.
The real magic practice was about to begin.
