I ready my sword.
“You intend to fight me?”
“That’s right.”
I don’t intend to condemn the Water God for seeing us humans as livestock.
After all, humans do the same thing—so we have no right to judge.
But that’s a separate matter from whether we’ll just obediently submit.
Being treated however you please…
Offering sacrifices just because you’re told to…
Quietly accepting your fate…
I’ll show you that things don’t always go the way you want them to!
“Foolish. Do you think a mere human can stand against me?”
“You never know until you try.”
“Pathetic. Enough—disappear.”
The Water God twisted its entire body like a raging whirlwind and spun violently.
Riding that momentum, it slammed its tail down.
GAAHH!!!
The stone pavement was gouged open, fragments scattering everywhere.
What destructive power—
It’s as if a bomb had gone off.
I leapt away just in time, but…
Had that blow landed, it would’ve been over right there.
“But… if that’s the case, all I have to do is dodge them all!”
“What!?”
I moved faster than the Water God could attack, throwing it into confusion.
I circled to its right…
Then quickly turned and shifted to its left.
I repeated the forward and backward movements, constantly evading its strikes.
With fallen trees floating around, footing wasn’t a problem.
“Scurrying around like a rat!”
“Must be tough having such a big body!”
“Guh!?”
As we passed each other, I landed a strike.
My sword sank in halfway,
but the opponent was so huge that it hardly did any damage.
At this size, this fight was going to be tough—
in fact, it might be the strongest enemy I’ve faced so far.
“A mere human!”
“You talk big, but how great can you be if you tried to make a deal with that mere human? Not very, huh?”
“You insolent wretch!”
The taunt worked—its attacks grew even more ferocious.
The onslaught continued relentlessly,
but since it was driven by anger, its accuracy faltered.
I could read its moves more easily now, so dodging became simpler.
Still… my counterattacks weren’t enough to be fatal.
At this rate, who knows how many more times I’d have to strike?
If things went poorly, the battle could drag on for hours.
I wasn’t too worried about stamina, though.
Back when I was a slave, I’d worked three days straight without sleep in far harsher conditions…
so this was nothing.
But what did worry me was the city.
If the Water God kept rampaging like this,
the damage could become catastrophic.
I had to find a way to end this before that happened—
“Fate!”
From my pocket, Licorice poked her head out.
She seemed to grasp the situation and, for once, wore a serious expression.
“Leave it to me!”
Correction.
That was her usual smug face.
